TYSHAWN SOREY / TIM DAHL
WITH CHASER, KEITH FULLERTON WHITMAN / CHUCK BETTIS, AND WILL BOLLINGER
Oct 8 | 7PM Doors | 8PM Show | $15 | 21+
On October 8, TV Eye presents the second performance of a new duo pairing composer, percussionist, and multi-instrumentalist Tyshawn Sorey with bassist and improviser Tim Dahl.
Tyshawn Sorey is a composer, percussionist, multi-instrumentalist, conductor, and educator whose work continually dissolves the boundaries between composition and improvisation. His work encompasses everything from solo percussion and spontaneously composed music to chamber works, orchestral compositions, and opera. Sorey has collaborated with artists including John Zorn, Vijay Iyer, Roscoe Mitchell, Wadada Leo Smith, Anthony Braxton, Steve Lehman, and Claire Chase, among many others. In 2017 he was named a MacArthur Fellow, and in 2024 he received the Pulitzer Prize for Music.
Tim Dahl is a New York-based bassist and improviser whose work spans experimental music, free improvisation, noise, and interdisciplinary performance. Over more than three decades he has performed internationally with artists and groups including Lydia Lunch, Child Abuse, Pulverise the Sound, GRID, and Yusef Lateef, as well as in numerous collaborative and solo contexts. Dahl is known for an intensely physical approach to the bass, incorporating extended techniques, amplification, processing, prepared instruments, and electronics to explore the instrument as a source of texture, noise, rhythm, and sound.
Chaser incubates the fractured energy of No Wave and the uncompromising force of brutal prog, channeling both into songs that balance melodic structures with sonic assault. Their music moves between jagged rhythms, dissonance, noise, and moments of unexpected melody, creating a volatile collision of songcraft and extreme experimentation.
Keith Fullerton Whitman / Chuck Bettis brings together two longtime figures in experimental and noise music for a rare duo collaboration. Whitman’s electronic and generative sound practices meet Bettis’s volatile, improvisational approach to noise and electronics in an unpredictable meeting of texture, density, and sonic abstraction.
Will Bollinger creates strange and uncompromising music with banjo, noise, and composed oddities. His performances twist familiar musical forms into something unpredictable, abrasive, and distinctly weird.
