Acclaimed drummer Pat Petrillo assembles a cast of A-List musicians to testify to the truth; … that many musical tastes can be blended together, shaken, not stirred, and poured into a tall glass of groovy goodness on his new release, Contemporaneous.
Releasing on Innervision Records July 2025.
Aptly named Contemporaneous, this genre-defying musical montage proves that while others may try to label or define an artist, ultimately their own musical voice will testify that many things can be true at the same time. This record draws from and blends many grooves and sub genres together to create an interesting and unique listening experience that defies definitions and boundaries, yet has a similarity to music from previous eras.
Collectively, the musically diverse cast of New York/New Jersey and L.A. based players on Contemporaneous is eye popping. It includes such guests as the legendary Nile Rodgers, who shares guitar duties with the ever-electrifying Oz Noy, the great Chieli Minucci and Blake Aaron. Chris Fischer (Spyro Gyra) and Matt Rohde (NBC’s “The Voice”) contribute colorful keyboard work, while Gary Grainger (John Scofield, Acoustic Alchemy) and Scott Ambush (Spyro Gyra) share bass desires. The horn section is comprised of Steve Jankowski (Chic) and Mike Cordone (Camila Cabello, Usher) on trumpets, Scott Mayo (Sergio Mendes, John Legend), Tom Timko (Gloria Estefan) and Phillip Wack (AWB, Lenny Kravitz) on saxes.
It’s evident from the first note of the album that many musical styles can coexist within the same time and space continuum, especially when they all originate from the same soul. Pat Petrillo entices the listener to experience an uncompromising variety of 10 contemporary instrumental tracks. From high energy Jazz/Rock Fusion with Funk, Blues, Neo Soul, and World music, with a pinch of New Orleans, the ideas flow from a variety of melodic and harmonic places. But the truth is spoken with one voice, evidenced in the authenticity and originality it generates. The record leaves the listener eagerly awaiting what unpredictable musical twists await with each passing track. “You can’t come from somewhere unless you’ve been there, musically speaking,” Petrillo states. “It’s important to create music from a place of honesty and conviction. I am what I’ve listened to and studied all my life. All this musical variety is embedded in my DNA, and I try to bring all that influence into my music now… Contemporaneously.”
