Ooze Box:

Ooze Box returns in Summer 2025 with FRESH CREAM, a new EP from the Raleigh outfit. The release features witty lyricism layered over shaggy lo-fi production, reminiscent of Silver Jews, Built to Spill, and Pavement.

“Crowd Work” tells the story of desiring greatness but being relegated to “cutting the grass.” The instrumentation bounces with plucked resonator guitars and humming organs. “Blowing Glass” captures a relationship in its faltering stage, as singer and songwriter Dakota Proctor opines that he could know them if only they didn’t rebuke him at every advance. “Jailbird,” an uptempo barn-burner, channels the singer’s frustrations with both law enforcement and himself. The song walks a line between Jimmy Buffett and Blink-182. Finally, “Gimme a Sign” pulls out all the stops with glittering guitars and stomping drums. It breaks down mid-track into a Sonic Youth–esque cacophony before rolling into a chant-along chorus: “It’s all downhill from here.”

Ooze Box began in 2021, after brothers Dakota and Tristan Proctor quarantined together. After watching Scott Pilgrim vs. the World, Tristan decided to pick up the bass. Dakota, the older brother, was happy to teach him, and soon the two were jamming on Daniel Johnston and Modest Mouse. Eventually, the band became a proper outfit, with Tristan switching to drums and Luke Gentri joining on bass and backing vocals. The trio has spent years honing their craft balancing thick grooves with laid-back rhythms and now returns in Summer 2025 with fresh music and renewed vigor.
